Hidden Canopy Treehouses Boutique Hotel

With rainfall showers and hardwood floors, these luxury treehouses don’t resemble your childhood backyard fort. At Hidden Canopy Treehouses Boutique Hotels  you’ll wake up with views that will make you feel like you’re on top of the world – high above the clouds, and ending each day watching the sunset.

About the Hidden Canopy Treehouses Boutique Hotel

The treehouses at the Hidden Canopy will catch your eye immediately because of their stunning design and the impeccable views. Your stay will quickly be one you’ll never forget because of the extraordinary hospitality from the owner, Jennifer King.

Jennifer and her team make you feel right at home from the moment you arrive. Her team even unloaded our bags for us from our car while we were greeted with a glass of sangria… talk about the perfect welcome!

Location

Sunset from Hidden Canopy Main House

The Hidden Canopy Boutique Hotel is in the Monteverde Cloud Forest region of Costa Rica. The property sits mountainside adjacent to Monteverde Cloud Forest.

The closest airport is Liberia (LIR) which is around two hours away by car. Monteverde is around a three hour drive from the larger San Jose (SJO) airport.

The road up to Monteverde is rather bumpy. If you’re renting a car, it’s best to have a vehicle that’s higher up and not so low to the ground. If you would prefer not to rent a car you can schedule arranged transportation with a driver through the hotel.

Accommodations

You can choose from six different luxury treehouses to call your home during your stay. We stayed in the Glade Tree House,  and we found it was the perfect size for two! From September-April, during prime travel season in Costa Rica, the Glade Treehouse is $299 per night. For descriptions and prices for all of the treehouses, you can visit their booking page.

It’s important to note this is an adults-only property for guests ages 16 and older from September-April. During Green Season (May-August) ages 14 and older are welcomed to stay.

Hidden Canopy does have a minimum stay of two, or three nights depending on the dates you’re booking.

Glade Tree House

No detail is left behind in your treehouse! The Glade Treehouse has a king size canopy bed, skylight ceilings, and a glass-covered wraparound balcony with a view of the cloud forest.

All treehouses at Hidden Canopy include a seating area with big glass windows – perfect for relaxing in the morning and enjoying a cup of coffee. Speaking of coffee…. All rooms come stocked with tea and coffee from a local coffee farmer in Monteverde! You can even make coffee the local way using one of the handmade wooden “Costa Rican coffee makers” that are in the room.

Of course, all rooms have the essentials,  i.e. a hairdryer, refrigerator, television, toiletries, Wi-fi, mini bar etc. All rooms also have portable heaters and extra blankets for chilly nights and dehumidifiers. The dehumidifier was a very welcomed amenity with the high humidity in the area.  It was so peaceful to have a night of sleep without waking up feeling sticky.

Popover Tip: The televisions inside your treehouse do not include cable. However, the main house has a library with DVD’s, books, and board games you can borrow to bring back to your room.

Exclusive Private Tours Available Only to Guests

Jennifer has two exclusive private tours available only to Hidden Canopy guests with her nature guide, Koki. Koki leads the night tour and the Curi Cancha Cloud Forest Reserve tour.  On the tour, he’ll teach you so much about the wildlife of Monteverde, and help you capture great photos! More information about the other Monteverde tours that Hidden Canopy is uniquely able to help you arrange can be found on their website here.

We took the night tour and the morning cloud forest tour. I highly recommend going on both the night tour and cloud forest tours because you’ll see completely different animals and birds at night compared to during the day.

My full review of the night tour and cloud forest tour is in my Costa Rica One Week Itinerary Guide.

Breakfast and Afternoon Tea

We were blown away with the high quality of food and attention to detail the owner, Jennifer King, puts into her guests breakfast and afternoon tea.

Breakfast at Hidden Canopy

Breakfast changes daily and includes homemade bread, fresh fruit and local specialties to the region. My favorite part of breakfast was the banana pancakes, and the coffee was incredible! Jennifer told us how she worked with a local coffee farm to create her own custom blend of coffee created exclusively for Hidden Canopy.

You’ll enjoy breakfast on the balcony of the main house with views of the cloud forest and the Pacific Ocean in the distance. Breakfast is served from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. each day, and Jennifer is able to accommodate any allergies with advance notice.

Sunset Tea with Sangria and Homemade Empanadas

The highlight of our stay was enjoying the Sunset Tea. Every day from 5 p.m. – 6 p.m. Jennifer invites her guests to join together for “Sunset Tea” (happy hour) on the balcony of the main house. Sunset Tea includes appetizers and desserts as well as an open-bar of complimentary coffee, tea, beer, wine, sangria, and soft drinks.

Watching the sunset with a drink in hand was was the perfect way to end our day and appreciate the beauty of Costa Rica.

Tips for Visiting

  • Check In is no later than 4:00 p.m. Plan to arrange your flights and driving plans to check in during daylight.
  • Always share if you’re celebrating anything special during your stay! I had balloons and chocolates delivered during the last night of our stay for my birthday
  • Book in advance if you’re visiting during peak season! They have a reasonable cancellation policy if you need to make any changes.
  • While the breakfast menu is set each day, please let Jennifer know in advance of any allergies or food preferences you have and she’s happy to accommodate any needs.

  10. Hi, great article piece, thanks for the details too! We are considering the treehouse and our children (15 and 16 yo boys) will be accompanying us. Do you think teenagers will enjoy the lodging? Were there other older teens there as well?

    Thanks

    1. Great question! It was mostly couples during our trip, but that was likely because of the time of year (second week of January) that we went. I think that’s the perfect time of age where they would appreciate the surroundings! They also have tree houses with two bedrooms too.
