One Day in Melbourne: a Step-by-Step Guide

So you only have one day in Melbourne and want to make every minute count? I have you covered!
Melbourne is Australia’s creative and cultural capital — a city where ornate 19th-century buildings stand beside sleek glass skyscrapers. Cutting-edge art, iconic sporting events, and an incredible food scene come together effortlessly.
This one-day Melbourne itinerary will help you experience the very best of the city in a short amount of time.
Is one day in Melbourne enough?
One day in Melbourne is enough to experience the city’s vibrant culture, eat some incredible food, and visit the colorful Brighton Bathing Boxes, but it is not enough to see everything.
Is Melbourne safe?
Melbourne is generally considered very safe for visitors, with low violent crime rates and a welcoming, walkable city center, especially in the CBD. Public transport is also widely used and safe during the day and evening.
Best Places to Stay in Melbourne
With one day in Melbourne you’re going to need a great location to call home! The best area to stay in will be the Central Business District (CBD). You’ll be walking distance to popular landmarks and the best restaurants and shopping.
There’s a range of hotel options sprinkled throughout the CBD for a variety of different budgets.
Best Hotels in Melbourne CBD
W Melbourne

This where I stayed in Melbourne – and I was obsessed with it! If you’ve never stayed at a W Hotel before you’re in for a treat. W Hotels are equipped with the most modern amenities and the design is always sleek and sexy.
Highlights of W Melbourne was their gorgeous pool. Our room was exceptional – we had so much space.
Their breakfast was excellent – think made to order eggs benedicts, omelets, and a full espresso bar. Their premium cocktail bar on site, Curious, is a “science” themed cocktail bar with cocktails that explore the fundamental states of matter: solid, liquid, gas, and vapour. Even if you don’t stay at the W Melbourne this cocktail bar is worth a visit!
Perks of Booking with a Chase Sapphire Reserve Credit Card
Our stay at the W Melbourne was completely free thanks to my Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card. Best of all – because I booked through Chase and used my card it included complimentary breakfast and a $100 property credit we applied towards our cocktails at Curious.
If you’ve been on the fence about adding this travel credit card to your wallet consider this your sign. Check out all the benefits with the Chase Sapphire Reserve here.
Rendezvous Hotel Melbourne

Beautifully restored to preserve it’s original 1913 charm – all with modern amenities. The location couldn’t be better with the iconic Flinders Street Railway Station and free tram just across the street. I’d recommend booking a room with a view to fully appreciate the beauty of this hotel.
Space Hotel

Rooftop jacuzzi, a gym, spotlessly clean, budget-friendly and just a 10 minute walk to Queen Victoria Market! There’s so much to love about the Space Hotel. Guests can choose a private room, or dormitory shared rooms to fit your preference. This hotel is a great option for solo travelers.
The Perfect One Day in Melbourne Itinerary:
Morning: Wake Up at the W Melbourne
I started my one day in Melbourne at the W Melbourne, one of the most stylish luxury hotels in Melbourne CBD. If you’re deciding where to stay in Melbourne, this property is hard to beat. Its central location makes it easy to explore the city on foot, and the design-forward rooms elevate the entire experience.
Because I booked with my Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card, breakfast was included — and this was far from a standard hotel spread. Think made-to-order omelets, a full espresso bar, and an extensive buffet that rivals some of the best brunch spots in Melbourne.
Not staying at the W? No problem. Melbourne is famous for having some of the best coffee in Australia. If you’re planning how to spend one day in Melbourne, starting with a proper flat white is non-negotiable. Below are my top three Melbourne coffee shops to kick off your day caffeinated and ready to explore.
☕ Best Coffee in Melbourne CBD
Patricia Coffee Brewers
It’s not uncommon to spot a queue outside Patricia Coffee Brewers — a beloved local gem tucked down a hidden alleyway. Known for their exceptional house-roasted coffee and perfectly caramelized canelé (the classic French pastry from Bordeaux), this tiny café consistently delivers on quality.
Much like the standing espresso bars you’ll find in Italy, seating is minimal, but there’s a sleek counter where you can linger with your flat white. Guests also rave about the warm, welcoming baristas, which makes the experience feel just as special as the coffee itself.
Dukes Coffee Roaster
Dukes Coffee Roasters offers a diverse selection of specialty coffees, teas, and rich hot chocolates, alongside an inviting lineup of cakes, pastries, and biscuits.
Located in the heart of Melbourne’s coffee district on Flinders Lane, this compact café is primarily geared toward grab-and-go orders. If you’re lucky enough to snag one of the few tables, it’s the perfect perch to soak in the city’s morning buzz and watch Melbourne come to life.
Vacation Coffee CBD
With pops of royal blue and blush, Vacation CBD’s retro-modern design is a refreshing break from the ordinary — a reminder that coffee should spark the same joy you feel when you’re on (you guessed it) vacation.
The coffee is locally roasted in Melbourne. Their intimate 10-seat espresso bar is tucked inside a historic building overlooking Flinders Square, making it the perfect spot to slow down and savor the moment.
Mid-Morning: Brighton Bathing Boxes
Without a doubt, three of the most photographed spots in Melbourne are Flinders Street Station, the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), and the colorful Brighton Bathing Boxes.
It’s impossible not to smile at the sight of 96 colorful wooden boxes lined up along Dendy Street Beach. Set against the calm waters of Port Phillip Bay, they’re a beautiful representation of Australia beach culture.
A Piece of Melbourne History
The bathing boxes are from the early 1900s! They were a hallmark of Victorian-era leisure culture. After the Great Depression, they were relocated from their original site on Bay Street to their current home at Dendy Street Beach, where they remain beautifully preserved today.
What Are the Bathing Boxes Used For?
Historically, the bathing boxes were used as private changing rooms for women heading into the sea. Today, they’re used for storing beach gear like chairs and umbrellas — some owners have taken their designs up a notch and have added more personal touches inside like cozy couches.
Can You Swim at Brighton Beach?
Yes — you can swim in Port Phillip Bay. The water is typically calm (you won’t find large surf here), though it can be chilly even in summer. We visited on a hot January morning and saw several families and children enjoying the shallow, gentle water.
How Much Does a Bathing Box Cost?
For their modest size — and lack of plumbing or air conditioning — these may be some of Melbourne’s most expensive pieces of real estate per square foot. Thanks to limited supply and high demand, boxes have sold for around AUD $450,000. It’s certainly a premium price tag for owning a small but storied piece of Melbourne history.
Brighton Bathing Boxes vs. MCG: Which Should You Choose?
If you only have one day in Melbourne, I’d prioritize either visiting the Brighton Bathing Boxes or taking a tour of the MCG.
If you’re torn between the two, let the weather guide your decision. On a cold, rainy day, you won’t enjoy Brighton nearly as much — that’s when a stadium tour at the MCG makes more sense. But on a sunny day? The Brighton Bathing Boxes are absolutely the place to be.
If you’re sold on the MCG Stadium tour, book this tour that also includes an overview of Olympic Park and the Rod Laver Arena (where the Australia Open is played).
Getting to the Brighton Bathing Boxes
If you’re short on time, the most efficient way to get there is by Uber directly to Dendy Street Beach (be sure to specify Dendy Street Beach, not just “Brighton Beach”). The beach is about 13 km south of Melbourne’s CBD and typically a 20–30 minute drive, depending on traffic.
Public Transportation to Brighton Beach:
- By Train: Take the Sandringham Line to Brighton Beach Railway Station, then walk about 500 meters to the beach.
- By Bus: Routes 216 or 219 from Melbourne’s CBD stop near Brighton Beach.
- By Car: Metered parking is available at Dendy Street Beach.
Whether you’re visiting for the photos, the history, or a swim, the Brighton Bathing Boxes are one of Melbourne’s most colorful and memorable stops.
Lunch: Queen Victoria Market
If you only have one day in Melbourne, Queen Victoria Market is the place to go. Queen Victoria Market, affectionately called “Queen Vic” by the locals is spread across two city blocks with over 600 vendors.
Queen Victoria Market is divided into sections called “precincts”. The “Organics Precinct” has your classic farmers-market style set-up with local farmers selling organic produce and meats.
If you’re looking for a bite to eat? Head over to the Market Place Food Court. This is where you’ll sample a few small bites from the different vendors to experience Melbourne’s electric food culture.
Whether you’re in the mood for something savory, sweet, or need a little caffeine boost, this is where you come hungry and leave very happy.
What to Eat in Queen Victoria Market
🦪 Fresh Oysters
Indulge in freshly shucked oysters straight from Australia’s coastline. These oysters had a buttery and clean taste. Order ½ a dozen oysters and don’t forget the tabasco and squeeze of a lemon.
🍣 Sushi
Grab a handroll and Saltwater and stroll through the market. Spicy tuna or spicy salmon – you can’t go wrong!
🍗 Chicken Ribs
Aussies love the crispy chicken ribs at The Corner Chicken Shop. They’re tender, juicy little bites of free-range chicken with a crispy edge. If you’re planning to snack throughout the day, I’d recommend a mini bucket.
🍩 American Doughnuts
These hot, fluffy, jam filled donuts have become a staple at the Victoria market since the 1950s! You can’t miss spotting them in the large airstream trailer (outside D-shed).
☕ Coffee, of Course
You’re in Melbourne, after all. Grab a coffee from Market Lane Coffee. I loved sitting at their espresso bar soaking in the atmosphere.
Afternoon: State Victoria Library
No one expects a library to be one of the most beautiful places in Melbourne – but State Library Victoria will surprise you!
It’s free to visit and centrally located right in the heart of Melbourne CBD.
Step inside and you’ll immediately be drawn to the beautiful architecture, sweeping staircases, and the iconic La Trobe Reading Room.
The La Trobe Reading Room is the highlight of the State Victoria Library. The space is perfectly octagonal, with a beautiful white dome shining light down below on the reading room desks.
For the best view, head to the upper balconies, for the most breathtaking view. It’s the best place to see how the long desks create a beautiful symmetrical wheel in the middle of the room.
Beyond the architecture, the library hosts free exhibitions featuring rare books, Australian history, and cultural artifacts (including Ned Kelly’s armour).
Even if you only have 20–30 minutes, it’s worth popping in to wander through the halls and soak in the atmosphere.

Late Afternoon: Shopping
Melbourne has excellent shopping. While I wouldn’t normally recommend dedicating precious time to shopping when you only have one day in the city, Melbourne is the exception. It’s also a great opportunity if you’ve been dreaming of bringing home a pair of ugg boots.
Here’s something many visitors don’t realize: in Australia, “ugg” isn’t automatically the American fashion brand. It’s actually a generic term that refers to the style of sheepskin boot — similar to how a stiletto is a type of heel.
If you’re visiting from the U.S., this is where it gets interesting. UGG (all caps) is a registered brand owned by Deckers Brands. In the U.S., you’re buying from that specific fashion label, and most pairs are manufactured overseas (commonly in China or Vietnam), typically retailing between $150–$200 USD.
In Australia, because “ugg boots” is a generic term, you’ll find a range of independent makers — many producing boots locally using Australian sheepskin. The styles tend to be more traditional, the quality can be exceptional, and prices are often significantly lower than what you’d pay back home.
If you’re on the hunt for the perfect pair, check Google reviews and pop into a few different shops before deciding. The selection, thickness, and craftsmanship can vary — and half the fun is comparing styles until you find the pair.
I had a great experience at this Ugg shop in Melbourne!
Early Evening: 🍸 Cocktails at Curious
You’ll need some curiosity to find this creative cocktail bar tucked away inside the W Melbourne.
If you appreciate a creative cocktail in a one-of-a-kind bar you need to add a stop in for a pre-dinner drink at Curious.
The menu fluctuates, previously they’ve had cocktails themed around the “elemental playground” of fire, earth, air, and water. When we visited the cocktails were science inspired and themed around the states of matter (solid, liquid, gas, and vapour).
Expect a multi-sensory experience with every sip, and a cocktail that’s visually stunning.
📍408 Flinders Lane, Melbourne VIC 3000, Australia
Dinner: Bite into the Best Dumplings
🥟 Oriental Teahouse
Ever since opening in 2003, Oriental Teahouse has earned a reputation as one of Melbourne’s most iconic spots for modern Chinese cuisine and after one visit, it’s easy to see why.
The handmade dumplings are the star of the show. With more than 22 varieties on the menu, narrowing it down isn’t easy but you truly can’t go wrong. Our standouts were the satay chicken dumplings, bursting with rich, nutty flavor, and the chili wagyu beef dumplings, which had the perfect balance of heat and savory depth.
And then there are the tea cocktails – something I’d never seen before! Ours was served over ice in the cutest glass teapot, blending traditional tea culture with a fun, modern twist. It felt so uniquely Melbourne.
Beyond dumplings, the menu features an impressive range of seafood, beef, and rice dishes, all beautifully executed. This isn’t just “another Chinese restaurant” — it’s a thoughtfully curated culinary experience filled with creative, flavor-packed dishes that make it a must-stop on a perfect one day Melbourne itinerary.

Bonus: Late-Night Bite
🍔 Charrd
Want to try one of the best burgers in the world? I definitely did, and it completely lived up to the hype.
Charrd was ranked 14th globally on the World’s Best Burgers list, and this tiny takeaway window in Brunswick East has developed a serious cult following. The menu only has two burgers available, and somehow the limited options makes the experience feel even more special.
Charrd operates out of a small takeaway window, and it’s common to see lines stretching down the block, sometimes more than 100 people deep.
Even after waiting close to an hour, I can confidently say it was worth every minute. The beauty of a Charrd burger is in its simplicity. The patties are made from a carefully selected beef blend sourced from Madina Halal Meats and cooked over open charcoal. The result is a distinct smoky flavor that sets it apart from any burger I have had before. The meat was incredibly juicy, perfectly seasoned, and balanced without being overcomplicated.
What to Order at Charrd: Go with the signature Charrd Double topped with truffle aioli, chili jam, caramelized onions, and sharp cheddar. Add fries and an extra side of charred sauce for dipping. It is simple, done exceptionally well, and absolutely deserving of the global recognition.
One Day in Melbourne: A Map
I created a Melbourne map with all my favorite hotels, restaurants, and activities pinned.
Final Thoughts
One day in Melbourne flies by, but this itinerary lets you experience a little bit of everything that makes the city special.
That said, one of the best things you can do in Melbourne is let your curiosity take the lead. If something catches your eye a tucked-away café, a colorful laneway, a boutique you didn’t plan for do not hesitate to wander off schedule.
Melbourne is a city built on hidden gems, and some of the most memorable moments happen when you stray from the plan. There are simply too many great spots to fit into one day, so leave room for a little spontaneity.
