Is Bodega Bay Good for a Weekend Getaway?

Absolutely. You’ll want at least two days to enjoy the charm of Bodega Bay. A weekend here lets you savor scenic hikes, coastal beaches, fresh seafood, and the laid-back vibe that makes Bodega Bay so special.

When to Visit Bodega Bay

🌸 Spring (March–May): Wildflowers bloom along the coast, and migrating gray whales often appear offshore. Perfect weather for hiking and birdwatching.

☀️ Summer (June–August): Peak season with cool ocean breezes and highs in the low 70s. Ideal for outdoor adventures, but book your lodging early.

🍂 Fall (September–October): Fewer crowds, crisp, clear days, and gorgeous fall colors along the coastline. My personal favorite time to visit.

❄️ Winter (November–February): Quiet, cozy, and great for whale-watching—pack layers and a rain jacket just in case.

🚘 Getting to Bodega Bay

If you’re traveling from out of state, the closest airport is San Francisco (SFO), about 90 minutes south.  Rent a car and take Highway 101 north.

I always find the best car rental deals and options through Expedia.

Getting around Bodega Bay

Bodega Bay is small, but a rental car is still needed in this area. Rideshares are few and far between. Every place I recommend visiting in Bodega Bay in this guide has free and convenient parking.

The Best Bodega Bay Itinerary

Bodega Bay trail walk

Day 1 – Outdoors, Wildlife & Local Flavor

Morning: Coastal Walk at Bodega Head

Kick off your weekend with a walk on the Bodega Head Nature Trail, a 1.7-mile loop with panoramic Pacific Ocean views. Keep your eyes peeled for harbor seals, seabirds, and—if you’re visiting between January and May—gray whales migrating offshore. The trail is easy, scenic, and lined with wildflowers in spring.

Tip: It gets breezy, so bring a jacket. Parking is limited, but the view is worth it.

Lunch: Spud Point Crab Company

If you only eat one meal in Bodega Bay, make it here. Spud Point Crab Company serves fresh Dungeness crab straight from the local waters. Their clam chowder is legendary—rich, creamy, and packed with tender clams. Pair it with a Dungeness crab sandwich, and you’ve got a true taste of Bodega Bay.

Afternoon: Ice Cream

After lunch, enjoy a sweet treat at Captain Davey’s Ice Cream and Espresso Bar. They have seating outside with views of the Pacific Ocean.

Choose between 16 different flavors of ice cream (the strawberry and rocky road flavors called my name), or try an affogato espresso with ice cream.

Too cold for ice cream? Captain Davey’s makes one of the best coffees in Bodega Bay.

Afternoon: Grab a Bike and Fly a Kite

Grab a kite and head to Doran Regional Park. Flying a kite here is one of my favorite things to do in Bodega Bay. The wide beach and steady ocean breeze make it a joyful experience for both kids and adults. If you don’t have a kite, stop by Candy & Kites in town—they have tons of kites you can buy!

✨  Popover Tip: If you’re staying at the Lodge at Bodega Bay, you can rent one of their free bikes and bike to Doran Regional Park.

Evening: S’mores or Wine Night?!

One of my favorite parts of staying at the Lodge at Bodega Bay is the way they turn evenings into little moments of joy.

From s’mores by the lobby fireplace (Sunday–Wednesday) to a wine and cheese reception (Thursday & Saturday), there’s always a special treat to look forward to every evening!

Evening: Sunset Dinner & Drinks at Drake’s Sonoma Coast

Book a sunset table at Drake’s Sonoma Coast for floor-to-ceiling ocean views while you enjoy fresh, locally sourced seafood. For the perfect evening, time your reservation just before sunset so you can start with a cocktail at the Fireside Lounge next door.

Day 2 – History, Wine & Coastal Charm

Morning: Coffee & Historic Bodega Town

Start with coffee on your balcony at The Lodge, then stroll downtown Bodega.

The Potter Schoolhouse and St. Teresa of Avila Church

This charming town is small but full of history—most famously, filming locations from Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds. Don’t miss:

🎬  St. Teresa of Avila Church – The charming white church was featured in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds. It’s one of the most photographed spots in the area.

🎬  The Potter Schoolhouse – Also featured in The Birds, this historic 1873 building sits right across from the church.

Afternoon: Oysters at Fisherman’s Cove

It’s the perfect Bodega Bay lunch – an authentic local spot that’s part bait-and-tackle shop and part restaurant.

Fisherman’s Cove is where you’ll find the best fresh oysters in Bodega Bay. Their oysters are harvested from Tomales Bay. My favorite way to order oysters is grilled with chorizo butter & fresh lemon.

Lunch: The Boat House

Still have room for lunch? Head over to The Boat House for a classic coastal California lunch. We started with a creamy clam chowder served in a sourdough bread bowl. Then my husband and I split a basket of crispy, golden fish & chips, which turned out to be the ideal combo to share.

Afternoon: Pop in Patrick’s Salt Water Taffy

Patrick’s Salt Water Taffy is an iconic Northern CA roadside stop that needs to be on your list of things to do in Bodega Bay. Thanks to its bright pink and white striped facadé, it’s also impossible to miss!

Patrick’s has over 80 flavors of saltwater taffy! You’ll find all the classic saltwater taffy flavors like watermelon, strawberry, and banana, plus wilder flavors like peanut butter, chili mango, and even pickle!

Afternoon: Sonoma Coast Vineyards

No trip to Northern California is complete without wine tasting. Sonoma Coast Vineyards is one of the best things to do in Bodega Bay for adults. Enjoy Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc just five miles from the ocean.

Tastings are a great value at $30 per person for a guided flight of four current releases. On a sunny day, grab a table outside to enjoy your wine overlooking the bay.

I loved grabbing a bottle to enjoy back at The Lodge at Bodega Bay later.

Popover Tip: Time your tasting for late afternoon when the fog starts to roll in—you’ll get the dramatic coastal views that make Sonoma Coast wines so unique.

Evening: Dinner at Terrapin Creek Café

End your weekend with a cozy meal at Terrapin Creek Café, known for fresh, seasonal seafood and friendly service. Highlights include Dungeness crab cakes, Mediterranean fish stew, and indulgent desserts like chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting.

✨ Popover Tip: Terrapin is only open Thursday through Monday. Book a table on their website

Cozy Up by the Fire with Wine in Hand

Back at The Lodge at Bodega Bay, cap the night with a glass of wine in your room. Every room has a wood-burning fireplace, making it the perfect way to end the day.

Day 3 – Relax & Unwind

Morning: A Morning Swim in the Heated Pool

lodge at bodega bay pool

Start your morning refreshed with a dip in the heated infinity pool or a soak in the hot tub at The Lodge at Bodega Bay. Often, you’ll have the space all to yourself—just you, the water, and the serene coastal views. Any opportunity to watch the fog roll in every morning is one of my favorite things to do in Bodega Bay.

Afternoon: Brunch at Drakes Sonoma Coast

No weekend trip is complete without brunch, and Drake’s Sonoma Coast has the best brunch in Bodega Bay. With sweeping ocean views and strong cocktails, it’s the perfect way to start your day. Brunch is only served Saturdays and Sundays, so plan ahead.

Begin with your favorite—mimosa or Bloody Mary (or both!). The smoked salmon benedict was my favorite. Made with local farm eggs, savory ham, and silky hollandaise that made every bite unforgettable.
